How Insurance Advice Works

A few conversations, some information from you & a lot of research from us.

Here’s what that looks like when you’re putting life insurance, income protection and business cover in place properly.

Before we start...

Most people who come to us have had insurance on their "to do" list for a while.

Some people have called an insurer, been bounced through a few menus, given up halfway through an online form, or ended up with cover they’re not quite sure about.

We work differently. We’re not trying to sell you a product.

We’re working out what cover actually suits your situation, finding the right insurer for that situation and putting it in place properly.

That takes a few conversations, some information from you and lots of research and background work from us.

The result is you end up with cover that actually fits, and you’ve got someone in your corner if anything goes wrong later.

The Process

Step 1: First Conversation

The first step is a quick chat, by phone or email, to work out if we’re the right team for you.

We’ll ask what you’re trying to protect and what’s prompted you to look into cover. You’ll get a feel for how we work and what’s involved.

We call it a connection call. The point isn’t to sell you anything, it’s to work out honestly whether we can help.

Sometimes the answer is no, and if it is, we’ll tell you and point you somewhere useful. Most of the time, the answer is yes, and we move forward together.

Step 2: Understanding your situation

We’ll gather information about you, your finances, your medical history, your work, your family, and any cover you’ve already got.

There’s a bit involved at this stage, but we make it as easy as we can. Most of it can be done online or over email, and we’ll only ask for what we actually need to give you good advice.

From there, we do the research.

We talk to insurers about your situation, especially if there’s anything in your history that might affect the cover available, and we work out the right structure for you.

Step 3: Advice & recommendations

We put together a written recommendation that lays out what cover we think suits your situation, why and what it’ll cost.

Then we talk it through with you.

You ask questions, we answer them and if anything needs adjusting, we adjust it together.

Nothing happens until you’re comfortable with what’s being recommended and why.

Step 4: Implementation & ongoing support

Once you’re happy with the recommendation, we handle the implementation.

That means applications, underwriting, organising any medicals and the back-and-forth with the insurer.

You don’t have to chase it all yourself. That’s our job.

After that, we don’t disappear.

You’ll get annual review invites, help if you ever need to claim, and a phone line answered by Jess or Alison, not a call centre.

The relationship is ongoing and we’re built for the long haul.

How long does it take?

It depends on how complex your situation is.

A straightforward setup for a single person with no medical issues can be done in a few weeks. A couple’s policy with a few medical questions, or a business arrangement with multiple owners, takes longer because there’s more to research and more medicals to organise.

We’ll keep you updated the whole way through, so you’re never left wondering what’s happening or where things are at.

What we'll need from you

We ask a lot of questions. Financial, medical, work-related, family history, your future plans.

There’s a reason for that.

The more we understand about your real situation, the better we can match cover to it and the more likely it is to do what it’s supposed to when it matters.

We also ask that you stay engaged with us through the process.

This only works if we can get the information we need from you and if you’re available when something needs your input.

Most of our clients find the process moves smoothly because they engage with it and we work hard to make our part of it as easy as possible.

Our clients want professional advice, the right cover for their situation and someone in their corner over the long term.

What does it cost?

There's an upfront cost for the research and written advice. Once your cover is in place, you don't pay us a retainer or any ongoing fee.

Your premium goes to the insurer, and the insurer pays us a small ongoing amount to keep looking after you.

You don’t pay higher premiums more by going through us than you would going direct. The difference is who answers the phone when you have a question.
